Literary Analysis and Response
September 9, 2019-June 10, 2020
Appropriate for high school aged/ability students
Mondays and Wednesdays: 2:20 PM-4:00 PM
Total Cost: $550
Non-refundable deposit: $50 applied to total cost
Location: ELA Room of Chance Academy (1600 Taylor St NE, Washington, DC 20017)
Instructor: Crystal Adair
Class Description:
Of Mice and Men. Macbeth. Their Eyes Were Watching God. When I hear these classic titles, I smile. But in this digital age, great literature has become a lost art, and reading books for pleasure feels outmoded and ho-hum (save for a few tweets, Instagram posts, and Facebook statuses, of course). Well, dynamic English teacher, storyteller, and all-around word-enthusiast Crystal M. Adair wants to change this for your student.
In this intensive, full-year course, your reader will dissect, deconstruct, and discuss some of the most celebrated opuses of our time. Better still, circle discussions and written work will be carefully and thoughtfully guided by specific, thematic questions—each of them about dignity and our shared humanity. For example, “Where in the story do characters fear being judged for who they are?” Or “Where in the story do characters truly feel heard, validated, and acknowledged …?” Analyzing author’s purpose (painstakingly so) and citing key textual support will be critical to surviving this course. Not to mention, the 2,251 total pages of required reading and countless more pages of required note-taking and essays.
So, will this course be a ton of work, rigor, and expectation? A resounding “Yes!” But will it be worth it to improve and develop your child as a more critical reader and thoughtful respondent? Will his or her exposure to some of the English language’s greatest literary masterpieces be worth it? Absolutely!
Please note this is an excellent opportunity for local homeschool families! This class is offered as a part of the regular schedule at Chance Academy and a la carte to other students not enrolled in Chance Academy.

Instructor Bio:
Crystal M. Adair has been an educator of language acquisition courses for nearly 20 years. Her background is a consummate blend of subject-matter expertise, instructional leadership, and teacher mentoring. As an instructor, Crystal has taught a myriad of ELA, communication, and theater arts courses, some of which include: World Literature, British Literature, American Literature, English Language Arts, ESL, Writing Seminar, Expository Writing, Creative Writing, Public Speaking & Debate, Documentary Filmmaking, and Creative & Performing Arts. As importantly, she is intensively trained in several, nationally recognized literacy strategies—ones like Step Up to Writing, Project READ, and Edison Teaching Academy for High School Literature.
Just as notably, Crystal has worked with Grades kindergarten through college, and she has served in diverse academic settings, with varied learning abilities, from Oakland, CA to Washington, DC. As a trusted leader among her peers, Crystal has taught others “how to meet children where they are and then how to structurally and supportively move them forward”— her tried-and-true teaching philosophy for two decades. As a result, Crystal’s leadership roles and appointments have been many—Curriculum & Instruction Chairperson, English Department Curriculum Coordinator, Staff Trainer, Educational Consultant, Corp Member Advisor [Teach for America], Academic Success Coordinator, and Arts Integration Coach, just to name a few.
But it has never been about the credits, the titles, or the accolades with Crystal. It has always been about the indispensable value of teaching and learning. As a person of color and a teacher of often marginalized youth, she is emphatic about preparing all children to be global citizens, agents of change, leaders of industry, and most importantly, voices for the voiceless. Crystal graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Mass Media Arts (Radio-TV-Film) from Clark Atlanta University."
