Class Description:
Culinary Arts is a 12 week long class that will offer a thorough exploration of culinary techniques and processes. Students will gain practical experience in the areas of food prep, menu planning, meal service, etiquette, customer relations, nutrition, and food safety and sanitation. The skills acquired in this class will not only introduce students to the world of a chef, but will also prepare them to cook and serve wonderful meals at home.
Culinary Arts is cross-disciplinary. Students will learn, discuss, and practice concepts from science, math, history, geography, and art. Students will learn and use foreign terms (esp. French). They will learn and use culinary arts math.
Typical Homework:
This course will also include projects and homework that may take from 40-120 minutes per week. Part of this homework time is cooking meals at home :) Examples of homework may be
- Identifying regions on a map and/or globe
- Short writing about the physical landscape that might influence the food consumed by people of the region
- Solving culinary arts math problems. (Math problems will be matched to the student's current math level.)
- Finding information about culinary science topics. (Ex: chemistry and/or biology of eggs.)
- Drawing the possible layout of a buffet table and explaining why it is sensible
- Designing and/or drawing a dish
- Defining culinary terms
- Explaining materials and/or equipment used in culinary arts
- Preparing and cooking dishes or meals and photo-documenting it.
Who This Class is Suitable For:
This class is suitable for 11 years old and older children. Maturity is important for safety and to take constructive criticism for improvement.
Previous culinary skills are not necessary. The class will move at a steady pace from the simple to the complex.
Inclement Weather
The inclement weather policy of Prince George's County school will be used to determine whether to hold class or not through the winter months. Friday, April 3 will be used as a makeup day for any canceled classes.
Allergies:
A complete allergy list must be provided before the first class. Students prepare dishes and meals together and then, of course, consume what they make.

Nadja Bonhomme is a classically trained Chef who has been working in the field of Culinary Arts for more than 30 years. She has been the Culinary Arts instructor for Chance Academy since 2016.
